India's National Payments Corporation will begin certifying NFC-compatible point-of-sale terminals for offline UPI transactions, allowing customers to make digital payments without internet connectivity on either device. Initial offline transactions will be capped at Rs. 2,000 per payment, targeting remote and low-network areas where connectivity remains a barrier to digital adoption.
Why it matters: Offline payment infrastructure represents a critical expansion of fintech accessibility in emerging markets, potentially unlocking billions in unconnected transaction volume and forcing payment technology vendors to rethink connectivity assumptions.
